How to make a bootable Windows7 pendrive..

For certain reasons we have to format, reformat or repair our pc. If some thing goes wrong in our Windows 7 pc, we insert the Windows 7 disc during the boot period and then use the recovery console on it. However, this process is time taking. Because a DVD’s speed is only 16x. What if we make the process faster! Yes, for this we have to use a bootable pendrive. This bootable pendrive will operate much faster than the mere DVD. Nevertheless, this is not a simple process at all. Because if we will copy all the files to a pendrive from the Windows 7 disc, we would end up with an unbootable pendrive, which cannot be used during computer start up! Therefore, to make the drive bootable we have to follow some certain procedures.

For this we need just a few things-(1) A virus clean PC for copying process, (2) Original Windows 7 disc, (3) A 4 GB pendrive. By following the steps given below you can have a bootable pendrive in just 10 minutes! See the pictures for reference.

Step-1: Connect the pendrive with computer and format it using NTFS file system. Because Windows 7 setup can only be booted from an NTFS drive. Then go to step 2.

step-1

Step-2: Go to command prompt (DOS prompt) through Start—All programs—Accessories—Command prompt. However, launch it using Administrative privileges, by right clicking on it, and then select ‘Run as Administrator’. In the command prompt type “diskpart” and press [Enter]. (The command line utility ‘diskpart’ is a disc partitioning utility, which can be used to perform many-advanced modification to the partitions.)

Step-3: Type “list volume” and press [enter]. This will show up the drives/partitions on your computer and show their volume number. Note down your pendrive’s volume number. Then type “select volume <pendrive’s volume number>” and press [enter]. {Example= select volume 11}. This will select the pendrive’s volume.

Step-4: Type “active” and press [enter]. This will set the active flag on your pendrive, so you can perform operations on it. Without this step, you cannot even boot from it. Now exit from ‘diskpart’ using “exit” command.

step-2,3 & 4

Step-5: Insert the Windows 7 disc in your computer.

Step-6: Again, open command prompt and navigate to the “boot” directory on the DVD. If you do not know how to navigate in DOS, prompt then follow the simple steps. Type “X:”. Then type “cd boot”. Hurrey you are done! {Here X means your pendrive’s partition}

Step-7: Type “bootsect.exe /nt60 <pendrive letter>”. The bootsect utility will transfer the boot sector to the pendrive so that it becomes bootable. The ‘/nt60’ is a parameter. Give a space after ‘bootsect.exe’ and then type ‘/nt60’.

step-6 & 7

Step-8: Now copy all files from Windows 7 DVD to the pendrive.

The same procedure is to be followed to create Windows Vista bootable pendrive

Now you have a bootable pendrive. You can boot it into the recovery mode, repair your PC. Even you can install Windows 7 from the pendrive, which is much more faster than the DVD.  See the pictures for reference. Please leave your comments. Thanks
